Finding somebody with whom you wish to establish a committed relationship is difficult, but making the relationship lifelong may be much harder. No relationship is without conflict. The way in which we deal with these conflicts will define our personalities. Some couples will face harder challenges and this may either cause them to build up a tighter relationship or force them apart. Then there are the families that have large conflict situations that occur because of children becoming teenagers. Irrespective of the cause, conflict is inevitable and we all need to deal with it sooner or later. And to save the relationship we should learn to resolve conflict situations and work on the relationship using diverse tactics. Evolutionary psychologists examined "mate retention tactics" in American men and ladies and found out these strategies include being overly watchful and threatening violence. Men's and women's tactics applied to keep their marriages intact differ. To evaluate qualities admired in partners and how they keep their marriages intact, researchers of the University of Texas carried out a survey of 214 married people. Men, more than women, admitted that they used their social standing and financial success as a strategy to arouse interest in them, reported the psychologists. Men also reported to keep their wives interested by promising changes and threatening sexual betrayal. Ladies were also more likely than men to work on their physical look as a tactic to keep their mate interested. As far as marital infidelity goes, it was found out that if a husband suspected that his wife was having a love affair, he would try to keep his wife from public activities, threaten punishment and criticize other men. Surprisingly, women who suspected their husbands of infidelity did not work on the marriage any harder than those without suspicions. Unfortunately, some men's strategies involved some minor forms of physical abuse of wives, said the psychologists. For example, in an earlier survey, 72 percent of women requiring medical assistance admitted that their husbands limited their contact with family and friends, wanted to know the women's whereabouts and verbally insulted ladies. |
